Francis is one of the Psysician Assistents working in the West Gonja Hospital. His education was sponsored by MUSTANGH Foundation.
In the following letter, Francis will tell you more about himself, his education and his experience with MUSTANGH (2019):
”Hello! I am Francis Tierenye, a Physician Assistant currently working in West Gonja Hospital, Damongo, Ghana.
I was born on 7th March, 1986 in a small town called Laribanga under Damongo in the Northern region of Ghana to Mr. and Mrs. James Tierenye. However, I come from a village called Charikpong in the Upper West region of Ghana. My parents migrated to Laribanga where I was born in search of arable farm lands because they are farmers. I am the first born of my parents with seven other siblings.
I started my basic education at Laribanga L /A Primary School when I was about four years old. However, I left for my home town, Charikpong where I stayed with uncle, now of blessed memory and continued with my education until I completed my Junior High school in 2002.
I gained admission into Lassia-Tuolu Senior High school same year where I offered Home Science and completed the course successfully in 2005.
Growing up as a child, I have always had the dream of becoming a professional nurse or doctor because I loved the work of these professionals –‘saving lives’.
Even though I had good results after my Senior High school, I sat at home for one year due to financial reasons before I gained admission to Tamale Nursing Training College in 2007, where I had my tertiary education to become a professional Nurse.
During my tertiary education I got sponsorship from West Gonja Hospital to pay all my school fees with the agreement that I serve the hospital for five years upon completion which I gladly accepted because it was difficult for my parents to pay my schools fees back then.
Having successfully completed nursing training college in 2011, I did my one year mandatory national service at West Gonja Hospital in 2012 and had my first appointment as a professional nurse the following year from the hospital.
Working as an enthusiastic professional nurse, which was one of my dreams come through, I also served in various nursing capacities such as being appointed by Management as the acting Nurse in charge of the Pediatric Ward, substantive Nurse in charge of the Out Patient Department (OPD), elected the local General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses ‘and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) within the hospital and many others.
In addition to performing my nursing duties as the OPD In charge, I was assigned to attend to minor medical cases where I prescribed medications to such patients in the absence of the doctors. This actually made me developed the interest to do Physician Assistant program.
Hence,I applied to management (West Gonja Hospital) for permission to go to school which was granted in 2015 for me to pursue  an Advanced Diploma program in Physician Assistantship  at College of Health and Well-Being, Kintampo. I completed the program in 2016 and continued to do a degree top up program in Physician Assistantship organized by University of Cape Coast, Ghana which I successfully ended in 2017.
This was made possible through my hard working hospital administrator, Mr. Remy Nyewie who secured sponsorship from Mustangh Foundation, Netherlands for me to pay my school fees during the period of my training.
I then proceeded to do my one year mandatory internship at Keta Municipal Government Hospital in the Volta region of Ghana from 1st November, 2017 to 31st October, 2018. Now I am back to my beloved hospital (West Gonja hospital) to start work as a Physician Assistant.
In conclusion, I’m generally a cool guy, very hard working with good cordial relationship with my co-workers. I’m still single, not married .Growing up as a child one of my best hobbies is watching football, I love that sports. I used to play when I was young but now I only watch. My favourite food? A local dish called ‘Tuo Zaafi’ (T.Z. for short) with green leafy vegetable soup.
In appreciation, I would like to give thanks first to Almighty God for making all these possible. Then to most especially my Parents, Mr. Remy Nyewie, Mustangh Foundation, Netherlands and West Gonja Hospital as a whole. I’m most grateful.
However, I still look forward to fulfilling my biggest dream of becoming a medical doctor one day.
